Although pizza and beer go together, it seems there are now as many variations of pizza as there are variations of craft beer!

Growing up in Brockton and on the south side, also known as Campello, there was only one place to get your pizza..Cape Cod Café or to the locals, the “Cod”.  It’s bar pizza.  I’m not sure if the Cod only sold cheese pizza but that was the only pizza we ever had growing up.  Sunday night was typically the night we would have pizza.  A call to the Cod and about a half hour later, piping hot pizza was being enjoyed around the supper table by my sister Donna and my mother and father.

Now, everyone has their favorite beverage to go with pizza.  Maybe it’s soda, water, tea, beer or, for me as a kid, it was milk.  Say what you want, pizza and milk was a great combo for me and, truth be told when we have pizza at home, I usually have milk with it.

Monday evening, we attended a wake for the mother of one of my childhood friends. Ron’s mother Anna was just a couple months shy of her 101st birthday and was the oldest member of my church.  I hadn’t seen Ron since we graduated from high school 51 years ago.  It brought back a lot of memories of our childhood.  Ron and I met in first grade at the Keith School in Brockton.  We attended Sunday School together, first communion, confirmation classes, participated in scouts, played church basketball at the Y and South Congo, and enjoyed many junior high and high school years in the church youth groups.  And later graduated from Brockton High.

With those long-ago memories still fresh in my mind, stopping at the Cod for pizza just seemed to be the natural thing to do for Dianne, Amy and me.  The bar pizza was as good as it always was, maybe even better.  After looking over the dizzying list of pizza choices and combos, Amy decided on a half pepper and onion and half hamburg with a beer while Dianne had an appetizer serving of meatballs which she thoroughly enjoyed, along with an ice cold lemonade.

Monday evening, I had beer with my cheese pizza!
